The Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2023 found its first finalist in the Qualifier 1 played between the Dambulla Aura and the Galle Titans. The Aura won the toss and elected to field first. They did a great job of limiting the Titans as they reached 146 all out in 20 overs, led by opener Lasith Croospulle’s brilliant 80 off 61, including seven fours. Hayden Kerr remained the pick of the bowlers for the Aura with figures of 3/18 in three overs.

In response, the Aura chased the target down with two balls to spare and were guided by impressive batting by Kusal Mendis (49 off 45) and Kusal Perera (53 off 39). With the win, the Aura has become the first team to book their place in the showdown in Lanka Premier League 2023. Kusal Mendis was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ for setting the groundwork for his team to complete the chase.

Wanindu Hasaranga recorded magnificent figures of 6/9 in LPL 2023 Eliminator

In the other game of the day, the three-time champions Jaffna Kings crashed out of this year’s LPL following their defeat in the Eliminator against B-Love Kandy. The team from Kandy thrashed the Kings by 61 runs, continuing their impressive run in the tournament. The Kings won the toss and elected to field first. However, Kandy took it upon themselves to grab the opportunity with both hands as they posted a total of 188/8 in 20 overs guided by impressive knocks from opening batter Mohammed Haris (79 off 49) and Dinesh Chandimal (41 off 24). Although Nuwan Thushara rattled the batters with 4/40, he remained expensive just like other bowlers from the Jaffna dugout.

In response, the Kings could only manage 127 before being bundled out within 17.2 overs. Skipper Wanindu Hasaranga dropped one of the performances of his life recording figures of 6/9 in 3.2 overs. No prizes for guessing, he was awarded the ‘Player of the Match.’ B-Love Kandy will now face the Galle Titans in the second qualifier on August 19. The winner will then set up their date with Dambulla Aura in the final on August 20.
