Jamaica Tallawahs registered their second win of the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2023, defeating St Kitts and Nevis Patriots by 8 wickets at Warner Park, Basseterre on Wednesday, August 23. The defending champions have climbed to the top spot with five points and a healthy net run rate of +1.125, while the Nevis Patriots are second with four points.
After being put into bat first, the home team managed to post a competitive total of 156 on a sluggish pitch. However, Tallawahs chase this down without really breaking a sweat with their skipper Brandon King leading from the front with a blazing half-century. Nevis Patriots made a good recovery after their top-order fell cheaply Salman Irshad wreaked havoc in the powerplay.
The Pakistani pacer dealt an early blow to their opponents as he dismissed Andre Fletcher, Corbin Bosch and Ambati Rayudu in his very first over. Rayudu, the second Indian after Pravin Tambe to feature in the CPL, bagged a three-ball duck in his maiden innings and left his team in tatters at 37/4. However, Joshua Da Silva and Sherfane Rutherford steadied the ship for a while before Dominic Drakes played an impactful cameo to take the team's total past 150.
Me and Kirk had a very clear plan: Brandon King
Chasing 157, King and Kirk McKenzie got off to a flying start as the duo added a 52-run partnership for the first wicket in 5.3 overs. King's 67 off 33 set the tone for Tallawah's emphatic win as it allowed No. 3 batter Shamarh Brooks (38 off 31) to settle and take his team home.
Speaking after the match, Tallawahs captain King said: "They (Pakistani bowlers in his side) have been going brilliantly so far. Salman in both games did well, he has a tricky action. It was difficult for the batters early on, so I got him in early and he was very good. Me and Kirk had a very clear plan, get a good start and take it from there. It worked for us. It's good to have consistent scores, but that comes from consistent approach. As an opener in the Caribbean, you have to assess and then play."
