Sri Lanka registered their first win in the fourth match of their ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 campaign. They defeated the Netherlands by 5 wickets at the BRABV Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Saturday, October 21. The Dutch skipper Scott Edwards won the flip of the coin and decided to bat first.
Batting first, the Netherlands faced some early blows as they lost 6 wickets on 91 runs. But then came a brilliant 130-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Sybrand Engelbrecht and Logan van Beek. Sybrand played a crucial knock of 70 runs, with 4 fours and a six with the willow. Logan van Beek’s 59-run knock followed Sybrand’s knock. On the back of these knocks, the Netherlands managed to post 262 runs after losing all the wickets in 49.4 overs.
Dilshan Madushanka and Kasun Rajitha scalped four wickets each, alongside one wicket picked by Maheesh Theekshana, including one run-out on the last ball of the first innings.
Sadeera Samarawickrama guides Sri Lanka to win with an amazing unbeaten knock
While chasing the target, Sri Lanka lost two wickets early on the score of 52 runs. But the number 4 batter Sadeera Samarawickrama scored an unbeaten 91 runs and stitched two crucial partnerships with Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka. Other than Sadeera, Nissanka and Asalanka also played the important knocks of 54 and 44 runs, respectively.
Riding on these knocks, the Islanders chased down the target in 48.2 overs, scoring 263 runs for the loss of 5 wickets and won the match by 5 wickets to register their first win in the tournament.
Star Netherlands spinner Aryan Dutt scalped three wickets at the cost of just 44 runs in his quota of 10 overs. Apart from him, Paul van Meekeren and Colin Ackermann also claimed one wicket each for the Dutch side.
Now, the Netherlands will face the five-time World Cup champions, Australia on Wednesday, October 25 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
