In a recent piece of news, Namibia became the first team to qualify for the T20 World Cup 2024 with the fifth consecutive win in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 Africa Region Qualifier in Namibia. Gerhard Erasmus’ men locked horns with Tanzania in the 15th match of the tournament at the Wanderers Cricket Ground in Windhoek.
Batting first, the star middle-order batter JJ Smit scored 40 runs off just 25 balls, with a four and 4 sixes following the 30 and 25 runs scored by openers, Michael van Lingen and Nikolas Davin, respectively. On the back of these knocks, Namibia posted a decent total of 157 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in the allotted 20 overs.
Namibia bowlers finish the job for the side to make it to the T20 World Cup 2024
Yalinde Nkanya and Akhil Anil scalped two wickets each for Tanzania, alongside one wicket each picked by Salum Jumbe and Johnson Nyambo, respectively.
While chasing the target, it was only Amal Rajeevan who played a well-fought unbeaten knock of 41 runs off 45 balls, hitting two fours. But his knock went in vain as other batters couldn’t sustain long against the Namibian bowling attack. Eventually, Tanzania could post a total of only 99 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in the entire 20 overs and failed to chase the target.
Namibia won the match by a good margin of 58 runs to register their 5th win in a row in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 Africa Region Qualifier.
Currently, Namibia are at the top spot of the points table among the seven teams in the tournament, with 5 wins in 5 matches; they are ahead of Uganda, who have 3 wins in four matches with one defeat. Kenya are in the third spot with the same number of 3 wins in 4 matches followed by Zimbabwe who have lost 2 and won 2 matches in the four matches, they played so far.
Now, Uganda, Kenya, and Zimbabwe are in contention to become the last team to qualify for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA and West Indies.
