Breaking! Kathmandu court announces 8-year jail to former Nepal captain Sandeep Lamichhane in rape case

Former Nepal skipper Sandeep Lamichhane was found guilty of rape in a hearing of a Kathmandu Court last year on December 29. Now, he has been sentenced to an 8-year jail term.

In a shocking piece of news for cricket fans, a Kathmandu court sentenced the star Nepal leg spinner Sandeep Lamichhane in a rape case. The Nepal cricketer was convicted on December 29, 2023, in the case after he was alleged to rape an 18-year-old woman. Now, the court has announced the degree of punishment for the 23-year-old Nepal international.

After Lamichhane was found guilty in this case, the court announced the 8-year jail sentence for him.

Apart from that, a report in the Kathmandu Post understands that Lamichhane has been fined an amount of $2255 (INR 3,00,000). In the same line of events, the court also ordered the cricketer to pay an amount of $1500 (INR 2,00,000) as compensation to the victim in the case, who complained about him raping him.

In the earlier developments of the case, the Cricket Association of Nepal suspended Lamichhane from the captaincy and the team; it all happened after a court in Kathmandu issued an arrest warrant against him.

Probably the end of an illustrious cricketing career 

Meanwhile, the former Nepal skipper also took to his Facebook account to write a post that read, “I would fully cooperate in all stages of the investigation and will fight a legal battle to prove my innocence. It is a conspiracy and wrongful allegation against me.”

Speaking of his cricketing career for Nepal, he made his first appearance in international cricket, while playing for World XI against West Indies at the Lord’s in 2018. After that, he played more than 50 matches in both ODIs and T20Is for Nepal. Playing 51 ODIs, Lamichhane picked 112 wickets with a brilliant economy rate of 4.37 and a very good average of 18.06. He also recorded his best figures in ODIs with a performance of 6/11.

Apart from that, he also scalped 98 wickets in 52 innings of the 52 T20Is, which he played throughout his international before getting alleged of rape.
