Team India completely rattled Sri Lanka in the 33rd match of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to register an unforgettable win in the history of the ODI World Cup. Sri Lankan skipper Kusal Mendis won the flip of the coin and asked the hosts to bat first. Batting first, India faced an early blow as skipper and star opener Rohit Sharma went back to the pavilion just on the score of 4 runs on the second ball of the first innings.

But then came an outstanding partnership of 189 runs for the second wicket between the former skipper Virat Kohli and young opener Shubman Gill. Kohli scored 88 runs with 11 fours, alongside Gill’s 92-run knock, including 11 fours and 2 sixes.

Apart from these two, the star number four batter Shreyas Iyer also played a swashbuckling knock of 82 runs off just 56 balls with 3 fours and 6 sixes. On the back of these brilliant knocks, India managed to post a mammoth total of 357 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in the allotted 50 overs.

Dilshan Madhushanka claimed a five-wicket haul; however, he went very costly, conceding 80 runs in his quota of 10 overs. Other than Madhushanka, Dushmantha Chameera also claimed one wicket, conceding 71 runs in 10 overs.

Shami-Siraj-Bumrah trio hand Sri Lanka a humiliating defeat

While chasing the target, the Sri Lankan batting lineup shredded in bits and pieces against India’s mighty pace trio of Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah. India’s ODI World Cup legend Mohammed Shami claimed an amazing five-wicket haul, which is also his second five-wicket haul in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. Other than Shami, Bumrah and Siraj also claimed 1 and 3 wickets respectively, alongside one wicket claimed by Ravindra Jadeja. With his five-wicket haul, Mohammed Shami has also become the leading wicket-taker for India in the history of the ODI World Cup 2023.

On the back of these unbelievable bowling performances, India bundled out Sri Lanka just at the embarrassing total of 55 runs in 19.4 overs, which was just 5 runs more than the one they scored in the Asia Cup 2023 final.

Eventually, Rohit Sharma’s men won the match by a historic margin of 302 runs and became the first team to make it to the semi-finals of the tournament with 7 consecutive wins in the 7 matches, they played so far.
