The ODI World Cup 2023 campaign for the defending champions England is looking in deep trouble as they are in a very delicate situation in the ongoing 25th match of the tournament against Sri Lanka. The Three Lions have been bundled out on the score of 156 runs in 33.2 overs.

Angelo Mathews stuns with his brilliant comeback

Former Sri Lankan skipper and veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews gave the first blow to England by scalping the wicket of star opener Dawid Malan. I was only the veteran all-rounder Ben Stokes who ended up as the leading run-scorer for his side, scoring 43 runs, and hitting 6 fours. Other than him, Jonny Bairstow was the only other batter to touch the individual mark of 30 runs, scoring 30 off 31 balls, with 3 fours.

Lahiru Kumara scalped 3 wickets for Sri Lanka at the cost of 35 runs in 7 overs. Other than him, Kasun Rajitha also claimed two wickets, conceding 36 runs in 7 overs. Apart from these two, the veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews happened to be a very economical bowler for the Islanders, conceding only 14 runs in 5 overs, including one maiden over to scalp 2 wickets.

If England lose today, it will be the fourth defeat for them in the fifth match of their ODI World Cup 2023 campaign and they will also move down in the points table of the tournament. Notably, England have won only one match in the tournament so far and that too against the lower-ranked like Bangladesh.

Jos Buttler’s men have lost to New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and South Africa. Following the ongoing match against Sri Lanka, England will take on the hosts India in the sixth match of their ODI World Cup 2023 campaign. India and England will play this match at the BRABVE Stadium in Lucknow on Sunday, October 29.

With said that, it can also be concluded that the defending champions England are currently on the verge of exit from the ODI World Cup 2023.
