'I remember going through a similar experience...' - Faf du Plessis opens up on Indian players coping with 'World Cup final' heartbreak

Former Proteas skipper, Faf du Plessis was also in the same kind of feelings when South Africa lost to New Zealand in the semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2015.

It’s been 20 days since Team India under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma faced a heartbreaking defeat against Australia in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023. The men in blue were the only unbeaten side in the entire tournament to stay unbeaten in the league stage, including a win against New Zealand in the first semi-final of the tournament.

But it was the final of the tournament where the Indian team couldn’t go past the Aussie trap and ended up losing by 6 wickets, which crashed their hopes of winning an ODI World Cup title after 12-year-wait since they won it last time in 2011.

"The heartache that you have to deal with takes a bit of time." - Faf du Plessis on India's World Cup defeat

Meanwhile, the former South Africa skipper and one of the star batters of his time, Faf du Plessis came up with an expressive statement over the concern of Indian players coping with this heartbreaking loss in the summit clash of the prestigious cricket quadrennial.

“That is a big challenge, I remember going through a similar experience as a cricketer when we went through the highs and lows of the 2015 World Cup. The heartache that you have to deal with takes a bit of time and it is a bit like breaking up with a girlfriend. You cannot just get over it straight away,” said Du Plessis on NDTV.

“India were so amazing in the way they played in this World Cup, they were unbelievable the way they went about their business. They will be feeling similarly and they will be heartbroken. That was their World Cup to win. That will take a bit of time and time heals everything. Your first series back feels like you are in the middle of nowhere. There are so quality players there and some experienced players who I am sure will help manage the young guys well,” he added later.

Notably, it was only the first ODI World Cup in which India entered the final of the tournament without having even one defeat to their name in the league stage and further in the semi-final.
