India and Australia locked horns in their ODI World Cup 2023 campaign opener at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday. Th match ended up in an exciting manner after a brilliant contest between the bat and the ball. The visiting skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and decided to bat first. Batting first, the Aussies lost an early wicket in the third over as Jasprit Bumrah got Mitchell Marsh on a duck.

Following that dismissal, the veteran duo of David Warner and Steve Smith stitched a crucial partnership of 69 runs for the second wicket. But then came the time when their middle-order collapsed and surrendered against the Indian spin attack, including the likes of Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Jadeja scalped 3 wickets at the cost of just 28 runs in his quota of 10 overs, alongside two wickets each bagged by Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav. Other than these two, Mohammed Siraj, Hardik Pandya and Ravichandran Ashwin also claimed one wicket each to bundle out Australia on the score of 199 runs in 49.3 overs.

While chasing the target, Team India fell into a very miserable situation after an unexpected and horrific start as they lost the first three wickets just at the score of 2 runs in 2 overs. But after this top-order collapse, the former skipper Virat Kohli and wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul took centre stage and stitched an amazing partnership of 165 runs for the fourth wicket to bring India back in the match in a dominating manner. However, Kohli couldn’t make it till the last ball and he fell prey to Josh Hazlewood, on score of 85 runs when India had scored 167 runs in 37.4 overs. Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood scalped 1 and 3 wickets, respectively for Australia.

But eventually, India ended up winning the match courtesy of a brilliant finish by wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul, who played a match-defining unbeaten knock of 97 runs, with 8 fours and 2 sixes, helping India to win comfortably by a margin of 6 wickets. KL Rahul also won the ‘Player of the Match award for his amazing 97-run knock for India.
