India registered a thumping win by 70 runs gainst New Zealand in the first semi-final of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 to secure their spot in the final of the tournament. Both teams played this match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday, November 15. The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first.
Batting first, the hosts India posted a big total of 397 runs for the loss of just 4 wickets in the allotted 50 overs courtesy of the brilliant centuries from former skipper Virat Kohli and the star middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer. Kohli scored 117 runs off 113 balls with 9 fours and 2 sixes, alongside Shreyas Iyer’s 105 runs off just 70 balls with a blistering strike rate of 150.00, hitting 4 fours and 8 massive sixes.

While chasing the target, New Zealand got a brilliant partnership of 181 runs for the second wicket between skipper Kane Williamson and star middle-order batter Daryl Mitchell after they lost 2 wickets at the score of 39 runs. Daryl Mitchell scored a well-fought century of 134 runs off 119 balls with 9 fours and 7 sixes, alongside Kane Williamson’s 69-run knock with 8 fours and a six.
But then came the sensational performance from the veteran in-form Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, who scalped 7 wickets at the cost of 57 runs in 9.5 overs and became the leading wicket-taker in the ODI World Cup 2023. Alongside Shami, Bumrah, Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav also picked one wicket each to bundle out New Zealand at the score of 327 runs in 48.5 overs.
Eventually, Indian won the match by 70 runs to go make it to the final of the ODI World Cup for the third time. Mohammed Shami won the ‘Player of the Match award for his sensational match-defining performance in India’s favour.
