Bangladesh and Sri Lanka locked horns in the high-voltage 38th match of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday, November 6. The match was full of controversy and a lot of other stuff, alongside cricket. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and asked Sri Lanka to bat first.
Batting first, Sri Lanka posted a total of 279 runs, losing all the wickets in 49.3 overs courtesy of the brilliant century scored by Charith Asalanka, scoring 108 runs off 105 runs, hitting 6 fours and 5 sixes. The first innings also witnessed a controversial moment when the former Sri Lankan skipper and star all-rounder Angelo Mathews was given ‘timed out’ by the umpire on an appeal from Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan. It all happened after Mathews accidentally entered with a broken helmet.
Coming back to Sri Lanka’s batting, Pathum Nissanka and Dhananjaya de Silva also scored 41 and 34 runs, respectively for Sri Lanka.
Shakib-Shanto duo powered the Bangladesh run chase
Tanzim Hasan Sakib scalped 3 wickets for Bangladesh, alongside two wickets each by Shoriful Islam and Shakib Al Hasan.
While chasing the target, Bangladesh got brilliant support from the massive 169-run partnership for the second wicket between number three batter Najmul Hasan Shanto and skipper Shakib Al Hasan. Both the batters played the crucial knocks of 90 and 82 runs, respectively. Eventually, Bangladesh managed to go over the winning line in 41.1 overs, scoring 282 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 41.1 overs and won the match by 3 wickets to eliminate Sri Lanka from the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023.
In a shocking turnaround of events and one of the rarest incidents in the history of this gentlemen’s game, two teams went away from each other and didn’t shake hands with each other after the end of the match.

Kusal Mendis expressed his disappointment, saying, "I'm disappointed the umpires couldn't apply common sense. Angelo Mathews' helmet issue was simply an equipment failure."#SLvBAN #BANvsSL #CWC23 pic.twitter.com/DFWIY133q3
