India have heaved a sigh of relief regarding the comeback of the veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the ongoing third Test of the five-match series against England. Notably, the modern-day bowling great, Ashwin withdrew his name from the Indian squad in the middle of the ongoing Rajkot Test with an immediate effect.

The news was shared by the Indian Cricket Board in an official media release. However, the veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik revealed that Ashwin can make a comeback anytime in the ongoing Rajkot Test as he has got a favour from the umpires as a very rare and exceptional case.

Here’s what Dinesh Karthik said about Ravichandran Ashwin

“Ravi Ashwin can come anytime during this Test Match and bowl straightaway. The umpires have given Ashwin that favour,” said Karthik on air during his commentary stint on the third day of the Rajkot Test.

The regulations suggest that a player is bound to wait for an equal time before the start of the play after the time he steps out of the field. But Ashwin’s case has been considered unique by umpires and they have given him a favour regarding the same.

“An umpire shall be informed of the reason for this absence. He/she shall not thereafter come onto the field of play during a session of play without the consent of the umpire. The umpire shall give such consent as soon as it is practicable,” reads 24.2.2.1.

Notably, Ashwin achieved a historic milestone as he completed 500 Test wickets at the moment when he dismissed the England opener Zak Crawley. He also became the fastest Indian bowler to reach this milestone in the longest format of the game. Apart from that, the  37-year-old also became the second-fastest international cricketer to achieve the historic milestone of 500 Test wickets.
