Sajeevan Sajana made a remarkable debut in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 by smashing a six on the last ball, helping defending champions Mumbai Indians secure a thrilling victory against Delhi Capitals (DC) and start their campaign on a winning note. Under pressure, Sajana calmly hit a six on her only ball of the game, with MI needing 5 runs to win on the final delivery of the match.
Making her debut in the WPL, Sajana displayed remarkable composure in the tense final moments of the match. Coming in to bat at no. 8 with the game hanging in the balance, she faced the daunting task of needing 5 runs off the last ball. Despite the odds stacked against her, Sajana showed her mettle by confidently stepping out and dispatching a delivery from Alice Capsey over long-on for a match winning maximum.
Sajeevan Sajana is a 29-year-old all-rounder hailing from Mananthavadi in Kerala's Wayanad district. However, she is yet to make her debut for the Indian cricket team. Originating from a modest background, her cricketing journey commenced in the paddy fields of her hometown, playing with friends. Sajana is proficient in both off-spin bowling and right-handed batting, ascended through the ranks in Kerala cricket, captaining the state team and representing India A.
Despite going unsold in the inaugural WPL auction, she was acquired by the Mumbai Indians in the WPL 2024 player auction. Making an immediate impact in her debut game, she clinched a match-winning six for her team. After a prolonged wait, the 29-year-old finally debuted in the Women's Premier League, making a memorable entrance. She aims to sustain her impactful performances, aspiring to contribute more match-winning efforts for her team throughout the remainder of the season.
Lost almost everything in the Kerala floods: Jemimah Rodrigues
Jemimah Rodrigues took to social media to commend Sajana Sajeevan's dedication with a heartfelt post after the latter's stunning last-ball six secured victory for Mumbai Indians in the WPL 2024 opener on February 23. Despite her team's loss, Rodrigues recognized Sajeevan's remarkable debut performance. Hailing from a humble background, Sajana, the daughter of a rickshaw driver, is the second player from a tribal community to feature in the WPL, following Minnu Mani. Her cricketing journey began using improvised equipment like a bat made from coconut petiole and a plastic ball near her home in Choottakadavu. However, she was unaware of women's cricket until she turned 17.
"The result was not what we hoped for but what a finish by Sajju the debutant! Comes from a humble background, lost almost everything in the Kerala floods, walks in when the team requires 1 ball 5 runs and hits an effortless six! What a story and more over what a player! 🙌🏻," she tweeted along with sharing a video of Sajana's match-winning six.
