'Ye naya Afghanistan hai' - Fans react as Afghanistan beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets to register third win in ODI World Cup 2023

Afghanistan have moved to the fifth spot in the points table of the ongoing edition of the ODI World Cup 2023, just behind Australia, who are also on the fifth spot.

Once again in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, Afghanistan finished on the glorious line after defeating Sri Lanka by a massive margin of 7 wickets in the 30th match of the tournament. They have registered their second successive win in the tournament with an overall third win, defeating England, Pakistan and now Sri Lanka.

Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and asked Sri Lanka to bat first; batting first, Kusal Mendis’ men were bundled out by Afghan bowlers at the score of 241 runs in 49.3 overs. Opener Pathum Nissanka scored 46 runs followed by 39 and 36 runs scored by skipper Kusal Mendis and middle-order batter Sadeera Samarawickrama, respectively.

Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled brilliantly and scalped 4 wickets at the cost of just 34 runs in his quota of 10 overs, including one maiden over in his account. Other than him, Mujeeb Ur Rahman was also picked by 2 wickets, conceding only 38 runs in his 10 overs.

Afghanistan batters outclass the Islanders’ bowling attack

While chasing the target, Afghanistan got an early blow just in the first over of the second innings without any run on the board. But then came a crucial partnership of 73 runs for the second wicket between Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmat Shah. Zadran scored 39 runs followed by Rahmat Shah’s 62-run knock. Later in the end, there came an unbeaten and match-winning partnership of 111 runs for the fourth wicket between skipper Shahidi and middle-order batter Azmatullah Omarzai.

Hashmatullah Shahidi scored an unbeaten 58 runs, alongside Omarzai’s 73 runs off 63 balls, including 6 fours and 3 sixes. On the back of these brilliant batting heroics, Afghanistan comfortably chased down the target in 45.2 overs to win the match by 7 wickets, scoring 242 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Kasun Rajitha and Dilshan Madhushanka scalped 1 and 2 wickets, respectively.
