India and Australia took on each other in the first ODI of the three-match series at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Friday. The stand-in Indian skipper KL Rahul won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first in both hot and windy weather at the PCA. Batting first, the Aussies posted a decent total of 276 runs, losing all their wickets in the allotted 50 overs.
The veteran opener David Warner scored a half-century. He contributed with a knock of 52 runs, with 6 fours and 2 sixes, helping Australia to recover after the early loss of Mitchell Marsh on the team’s score of 4 runs in the first over of the first innings.
Other than him, former skipper Steve Smith and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis also contributed with the knocks of 41 and 45 runs, respectively; Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green also scored 39 and 31 runs to help the visitors reach a total of 276 runs.
The veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami bowled brilliantly and claimed an impressive five-wicket haul, scalping 5 wickets at the cost of 51 runs in his quota of 10 overs, including a maiden over. Apart from Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja also picked one wicket each for India.

While chasing the target, the men in blue got a brilliant start from the young opening pair of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shubman Gill. The duo stitched a brilliant partnership of 142 runs for the first wicket in 21.4 overs before Gaikwad got trapped by Adam Zampa in an LBW on the individual score of 71 runs. Gill also played a knock of 74 runs off 63 balls with six fours and 2 sixes.
Other than these two, skipper KL Rahul played an unbeaten captaincy knock of 58 runs, hitting 4 fours and a six, alongside Suryakumar Yadav’s 50 runs, with 5 fours and a six. Skipper KL Rahul finished the match for India with a brilliant six, helping India chase down the target in 48.4 overs with 8 balls to spare. Mohammed Shami won the 'Player of the Match award for his match-defining performance with an impressive five-wicket haul in India's favour.
Eventually, India won the match by 5 wickets and took a lead of 1-0 in the three-match series; now, both teams will play the second match of the series at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday, September 24.
