Former legendary Indian batter and skipper, Sunil Gavaskar came up with a very hard and fast-lined stance while talking about the critics who were questioning Team India of late. Gavaskar’s statement came in the aftermath of India’s massive 10-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the recently concluded Asia Cup 2023 final.

Notably, Team India bundled out Sri Lanka at the score of just 50 runs, one of the lowest totals in ODI history. Thanks to the terrific spell bowled by star pacer Mohammed Siraj who scalped 6 wickets at the cost of just 21 runs in 7 overs, including one maiden.

"We were expecting some more conspiracy theories blaming India." - Sunil Gavaskar

Coming back to Gavaskar’s statement, he went on to term India’s victory as a ‘tight slap’ on the face of critics who were making the claims that India deliberately wanted to lose the match against Sri Lanka in the super-4 round to make sure Pakistan’s elimination from the tournament.

"What a tight slap on the faces of all those across the Western border who were screaming and shrieking that Bharat after being dismissed for 213 against Sri Lanka was purposely losing the game so as to deprive Pakistan of a place in the final. Did these brainless people even think of the possibility that after Bharat loses the game to Sri Lanka and then Pakistan beat Sri Lanka and the Bharat v Bangladesh game gets rained off, it was Bharat who would not have qualified for the final. So why would Bharat lose deliberately to Sri Lanka? Morons" read the Column Gavaskar wrote for Mid-Day.

“When Pakistan lost to Sri Lanka and were knocked out of the tournament, we were expecting some more conspiracy theories blaming Bharat for the loss, but surprises never cease so they forgot everything else and concentrated on lambasting their skipper Babar Azam for their exit from the tournament,” he added later.

Speaking of Team India, they will now face Australia in the three-match ODI series, starting on Friday, September 22 with the first ODI at the PCA IS Bindra Cricket Stadium in Mohali.
