Welsh Fire and Northern Superchargers locked horns in the 26th game of The Hundred Men's 2022 competition at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. The home team (Welsh) won the toss and elected to bat first. However, they had a poor start as Tom Banton (6) was caught behind by Michael Pepper off Craig Miles on the 18th ball of the innings. Wicketkeeper batter Joe Clarke (14) followed next as he fell prey to David Wiese.
Matt Critchley (3) tried to clear the long square boundary with a sweep shot but was caught by Miles off Adil Rashid. On the 57th ball, David Miller (3) was cleaned up by Miles. At 53/4, Ben Duckett and Lues du Plooy stitched an unbeaten partnership of 61 runs to take the team to 114/4. Left-hander Duckett scored an unbeaten 64 off 48 balls including eight fours. Du Plooy, on the other hand, scored 21 off 15 balls. He was the only player to hit a six in the innings.
Superchargers handed the Fires their seven straight defeats
In reply, the Purple brigade had a great start as openers, Adam Lyth and skipper Faf du Plessis stitched a partnership of 75 runs. The former was the first wicket to fall as he was caught behind by Joe Clarke off Ish Sodhi. Lyth scored 47 off 32 balls, including five fours and two sixes. Skipper Du Plessis scored 32 off 24 balls, including two fours and as many sixes before being caught at long-off by substitute fielder RF Higgins of Sodhi.
However, the game was almost over for the Red Army (Fire) at this stage. The Northern team had scored 84 runs in 59 balls and needed another 31 off 41 balls. Superchargers easily chased the target as they won the game by six wickets and nine balls remaining. They also handed the Welsh, their seventh defeat in as many games in the season.
The Cardiff-based side will play their last game of the season against Trent Rockets in Nottingham on August 29. On the other hand, Superchargers will play their last league game against Southern Brave on August 31 in Leeds. In that game, the team would look to win to have a chance at a playoff spot.
This is how Twitter reacted
Northern Superchargers' XI tonight has the vibe of a South Africa side from a forgotten World T20: du Plessis, Wiese, van der Merwe, Parnell all in there. Presumably Behardien, Ingram and Tsotsobe are running the drinks

I have just watched my first Hundred game .Welsh Fire are dreadful!
There are better club sides up and down the country. In spite of the hype a very poor crowd. Afraid @thehundred will not survive. Where are the stars we were promised @ECB_cricket ?— West Country Racing (@Wcountryracing) August 26, 2022
Welsh Fire are so bad at #TheHundred2022 they should be stripped of Hundred status and forced to play Hundred Minor County sides.

Welsh Fire Men following the legacy of their women's counterparts last year. They have now lost seven games and are now on the brink of equalling Mumbai Indians and Karachi Kings for losing eight games in a row

That batting at the death for Welsh Fire ladies was dire. No clue whatsoever

...Welsh Fire seem a bit too happy with their mediocrity #TheHundred

#thehundred Welsh Fire have only themselves to blame for their tactics this season. Only posting 114 and having a player like Pretorius coming in at 7 , not being able to face any deliveries. Hard decisions need to be made, coach Gary Kirsten has to go.
