Sam Billings has played for three teams in the Indian T20 league so far. Them being Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata. He was with the yellow army in the 11th and 12th editions of the league. As a matter of fact, he scored a memorable half-century during his first game for the Chennai-based franchise in 2018.
However, he was recently purchased by Kolkata in the 2022 mega auction for INR 2 crore. He has played all the games for the two-time champions so far in the Indian T20 league 2022. The keeper-batter has been fairly decent as he played a couple of handy cameos this season already.
Billings recently spoke about his time in all the teams he has played for in the cash-rich league. He also stated that Chennai and Kolkata have a lot of similarities in terms of consistency and organization. While speaking to NDTV, Billings also mentioned that he was a part of Chennai's title-winning campaign in 2018.
“Yeah, I think with the three franchises I have represented in the Indian T20 league, Chennai obviously incredibly successful. Winning the ITL and also becoming the runners-up. Two years that I really enjoyed. Kolkata I think have a lot of similarities with Chennai in terms of the organisation and consistency on and off the field,” said Sam Billings.
Further on, the 30-year-old went on to praise Kolkata's coach Brendon McCullum. He felt that the Kiwi legend played a huge part in the success of Chennai and Kolkata. Billings then stated that McCullum gives confidence to the players.
“I think it plays a huge part in why both the franchises have been successful. Definitely think Brendon McCullum’s fresh positivity is something I have really enjoyed working with so far and definitely a different approach to most coaches which is really good to experience. The good thing is we have gotten along really well. McCullum makes you feel confident as a player. I think that is such an important thing for any coach, to make players feel valued and have the backing from him so that you can play that attacking and positive brand of cricket," he added.
