England were knocked out of the FIFA World Cup 2022 after their loss against the defending champions France in the quarter-final. England star Harry Kane had the opportunity to take the game to extra time in the 85th minute, however, he kicked his second penalty over the bar leaving the England fans disappointed.
The 29-year-old became the nation’s joint all-time leading goalscorer with his successfully converted spot-kick. England teammate Kyle Walker, who previously played alongside Kane at Tottenham, sent a message to the Three Lions fans, urging them to get behind the striker.
“I’ve had the pleasure of playing with H since he was 15. His mentality has stayed the same. I’m not just saying that because of the situation. It doesn’t change, it stays the same. “I bet everyone in the country would’ve wanted him on the penalty. You win some, you lose some. He scored many crucial penalties,” Walker told talkSPORT.
“That takes big character to step up on both occasions. He’s a big character and a leader.“I can assure you there are 25 lads in the dressing room behind him. And I should hope the country is behind him, supporting him in a difficult moment. He will be back because that is the player he is, he added.
England midfielder Jude Bellingham was seen talking to Kane in the immediate aftermath of the penalty miss and he, too, had nothing but gratitude for his skipper.
“I just said, as the leader of the team that he is with the media and on the pitch, I felt it was important I kept him in the game mentally. For me, I can’t thank him enough for how he’s integrated me into the team and I’ve seen him deliver time and time again,” Bellingham was quoted as saying by talkSPORT“
“On this occasion, he didn’t score. But he’s done more than enough for his country. I just wanted to remind him that he can still win the game. It wasn’t to be but there is no negative feeling towards him after what he’s done for this country.”
We wouldn’t be in the position without Kane : Gareth Southgate
Meanwhile, Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate refused to blame Kane for his side’s quarter-final elimination. “We wouldn’t be in the position we are without the way he’s led, the way he’s played, the important goals he’s scored for us. We’re a collective, we’ve won games because of the group, and tonight, across 100 minutes, there’s lots of things that the whole team have done well, and some things the whole group didn’t do so well,” Southgate told talkSPORT.
“And that’s how we feel about it, it’s not about any individuals, in the end I don’t think the players could have given anymore than they’ve given right across this tournament,” Southgate added.
