Football in India often finds itself in a unique place. Given the number of football fans in the country, Indian football has huge potential and is on the brink of breaking through. The huge potential of the sport however also comes out as a huge bane for Indian football. There is a line of politicians and businessmen ready to milk the sport when it becomes big and this constant struggle for authority over the game has proven to be the downfall of Indian football altogether.

A summarisation of Indian football’s apathy was recently laid bare for everyone to see in an eight-second video. The video that is getting viral on social media shows La Ganesan, Governor of West Bengal pushing aside Sunil Chhetri the captain of the winning team for a photo.

The incident took place on Sunday 18th September 2022 when Bengaluru FC defeated Mumbai City FC by 1-2 in the Durand Cup final and clinched their first ever Durand Cup trophy. Chhetri who has been a signing light for Indian football took to the stage to receive the coveted Durand Cup, the oldest Cup in Asia.

West Bengal’s governor was present at the ceremony and held the Cup with both hands while the winning captain Sunil Chhetri stood by barely touching the trophy. While it was disrespectful enough already, all hell broke loose when the governor pushed Chhetri aside out of the way for a better photo opportunity.

Ever since the video was posted online, all of the sporting fraternity has come out and slammed La Ganesan for disrespecting a legend of the game just so he could look good in a photo.

Here's how Twitter reacted to the viral video:
