On 18 December 2022, Argentina took on France in the ongoing FIFA World Cup. It was the final of this tournament that took place in the Lusail Stadium. Defending champions, France came to this clash after defeating Morocco by 2-0 in the semi-final. On the other hand, Argentina outclassed Croatia by a 3-0 margin in the semi-final.

So, the stage was set for a great battle between these sides. All eyes were on players like Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe. Both players were also looking to win the Golden Boot award in this World Cup. However, these countries were also looking to win this World Cup for the third time in their respective history.

Speaking of the match, Argentina started the game with more intensity than the defending champions. In the 17th minute, Angel Di Maria had a chance to score for his country but his effort went over the bar. However, in the 21st minute, the referee awarded a penalty to Argentina after a clumsy challenge from Dembele on Di Maria. 

Then, in the 23rd minute, Lionel Messi scored the opener from the spot and made it 1-0 in favor of the Rosarios. It was Messi’s fourth penalty goal in this tournament. After that, in the 36th minute, Di Maria scored the second goal for Argentina while Mac Allister assisted him. Thus, the first half ended 2-0. In the second half, France were looking to pull one goal back quickly. But, in the 50th minute, Rodrigo De Paul had an effort at the goal. Lloris made a comfortable save to deny him. In the 59th minute, Julian Alvarez tried to score the third goal but Lloris made another comfortable save.    

But, in the 80th minute, Mbappe scored from the spot to make it 2-1. Then, in the following minute only, Mbappe made it 2-2 with a fantastic finish. With that, it was the seventh goal from Kylian Mbappe in this tournament.  Finally, the game ended 2-2 after 90 minutes and the game went into extra time. Then, in the 108th minute, Messi scored the third goal. But, Mbappe completed his hattrick in the 118th minute from the spot, and the game ended 3-3. The game went into a penalty shootout. Argentina defeated France by 4-2 to win the World Cup.
