Australia was criticised by Gautam Gambhir for controversially dismissing Jonny Bairstow in the second Ashes Test. During the final ball of the 52nd over of England's second innings, Bairstow dodged a short ball from Cameron Green. Alex Carey, the wicketkeeper, received the ball. Bairstow moved out from his crease as the over came to a close to speak with his teammate Ben Stokes.
Bairstow was out for a stumped-out dismissal as he was unaware that wicketkeeper Carey had sent the ball in that direction. Many spectators praised Carey for his cunning, even if they had previously criticised Indian players' attempts to run out down the non-striker's end. A few analysts also brought up the Spirit of Cricket controversy. Gautam Gambhir took to Twitter to shed light on this incident. He wrote, "Hey sledgers….does spirit of the game logic apply to u or is it just for Indians?"
Australia vs England: Second Test Day Five
Australia ultimately defeated England by 43 runs in the second Ashes Test to take a 2-0 series lead in the World Test Championship (WTC) over England. Ben Stokes, the captain of England, stated during the game that if his team had attempted to be dismissed in that way, he could have withdrawn the appeal.
When it comes to Stokes' statement, Pat Cummins was questioned about his opinions. The captain of Australia responded with a one-word answer, as he said, “Okay”.
The wicket of Jonny Bairstow will be discussed throughout The Ashes heritage for a very long time. It was one of the pivotal moments during the second Test as Bairstow and Ben Stokes were establishing a partnership for the sixth wicket. England might have been able to tie up the series in London if they had formed a significant partnership.
On July 6, Leeds will host the start of the third Test of the Ashes series. It will be intriguing to watch if Australia can win the Ashes series 3-0 or if England can mount a comeback and stoke the flames of this already heated Ashes series.
