In order to be prepared for the ODI World Cup, management has been asked by former India skipper Sourav Ganguly to monitor experienced leg spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal. Chahal was a member of the team for the T20 World Cup in Australia last year, but he didn't participate in any matches because India was eliminated in the semi-finals after losing to England. While Kuldeep Yadav, as well as Ravi Bishnoi, are other capable wrist spinners India has at their disposal, Ganguly believes Chahal might be crucial to their hopes.

Sourav Ganguly spoke on Star Sports about keeping an eye on Yuzvendra Chahal for the upcoming ODI World Cup. He said, “(Ravi) Bishnoi and Kuldeep (Yadav) are there but (Yuzvendra) Chahal somehow misses big tournaments. He performs extremely consistently in shorter formats, whether it is 20-over or 50-over. It is important to keep an eye on him as well.”

Sourav Ganguly further emphasised the difficulty SENA nations have in dealing with wrist spinners, particularly given that the competition will be hosted on their own soil. Sourav Ganguly said, “When you will play Australia, England or South Africa, a wrist-spinner makes a difference in these conditions. In 2011, there was Piyush Chawla, who bowled well.”

The former Delhi Capitals Director of Cricket emphasised that India has always performed well in tournaments when the spinners have been on top of their game to support his point. The former Indian Cricket Board President said, "When we went to South Africa in 2007, there also our wrist-spinners bowled well along with the fast bowlers. Harbhajan Singh was in that team. I feel it will be extremely important to keep a wrist-spinner in Indian conditions."

On October 8, India's World Cup campaign will get underway in Chennai against Australia. India would want to have the services for clashes against Australia and England which are set to take place on spin-friendly pitches.
