On 13 December 2022, the 12th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) kicked off. However, on 16 December, Sydney Thunders locked horns with Adelaide Strikers in Sydney. It was the fifth match of this tournament. Both teams were coming off after winning their season opener. So, both teams were looking to continue their winning momentum.
Speaking of the match, Adelaide Strikers won the toss and opted to bat first. Hence, Matthew Short and Jake Weatherald came out to open the innings. But, both the openers went back to the dugout after Adelaide reached 24 runs in 3.5 overs. Short scored nine runs off 11 balls while Weatherald scored 10 runs off 10 balls.

Then, Chris Lynn and Colin de Grandhomme stitched a partnership of 66 runs. Lynn scored 36 runs off 27 balls, including four boundaries and one six. On the other hand, Grandhomme scored 33 runs off 24 balls, including two fours and two sixes. After that, other batters came up with some small contributions and Adelaide Strikers scored 139 runs for nine wickets in 20 overs. For Sydney Thunders, Fazalhaq Farooqi took three wickets for 20 runs in four overs. Apart from him, Gurinder Sandhu, Daniel Sams, and Brendan Doggett took two wickets each in this match.
In reply, Alex Hales and Matthew Gilkes came out to open for Sydney Thunders. But, fans became shocked when they got bundled out for just 15 runs in 5.5 overs. Brendan Doggett was the highest scorer with just four runs off two balls. It was the lowest score by a team in the BBL and in the history of this shortest format of the game. Thus, Adelaide Strikers won the match by 124 runs and registered their second win of this season. No batter of Sydney Thunders managed to cross the five-run mark in this match. For Adelaide, Wes Agar took four wickets for six runs in two overs. Matthew Short took one wicket for five runs in one over. But, Henry Thornton was the star of the show as he picked up five wickets for three runs in 2.5 overs.
