The rivalry between India and Pakistan has been going on the cricket field ever since the two nations began playing against each other. The two teams clashed once again recently in the Asia Cup 2022 where India emerged victorious by five wickets.
Before the game, there were widespread discussions happening on news channels as a part of the build-up to the epic encounter. Among those numerous discussions, one particular joint coverage of the TV channel, Aaj Tak with Pakistan Channel Samaa TV landed in controversy.
Former Pakistan Captain, Shahid Afridi, who was a part of the discussion panel from Pakistan gave a controversial statement about former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir. While talking about his relationship with the Indian player, Afridi said,
“Yes, sometimes there are some arguments with Gautam Gambhir on social media. I think that Gautam is a sort of character which no one likes even in the Indian team.”
The statement by Afridi didn’t go down well with the Indian fans who began bashing Pakistan all-rounder on Twitter. Journalist Vikrant Gupta and cricketer Harbhajan Singh also found themselves in the controversy as they both were seen laughing following Afridi’s remarks. The fans lambasted Harbhajan Singh and Vikrant Gupta for not giving a befitting reply to Afridi and making a laughing stock of the nation’s hero.
In another development, Gautam Gambhir has posted a cryptic Tweet on his Twitter handle. Gambhir took to Twitter on Tuesday and wrote, “’I bear the wounds of all the battles I avoided.’ - Fernando Pessoa.” The tweet is being considered a jibe at his former team-mate Harbhajan for his reluctance to reply to Afridi's distasteful comments.
The clash between Afridi and Gambhir dates back to the year 2007 when the duo had an altercation on the field during an ODI match in Kanpur. Even after their retirement, both of them have been involved in several arguments on social media. And now the recent remarks by Afridi have once again ignited the animosity between the two.
