Indian head coach Rahul Dravid defended the out-of-form Suryakumar Yadav after yet another failure for him in the ODI format. SKY could score only 24 runs off 25 balls in the second ODI of the three-match series against West Indies. But still, the head coach shielded Surya’s poor outing in the 50-over format.

It is worth mentioning that India suffered a defeat in the second ODI against West Indies with a 6-wicket margin, resulting in the series being tied at 1-1. The team management and head coach Rahul Dravid’s planning has come under the scanner after a miserable performance just a few months ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023.

It's up to him to utilize the opportunities – Rahul Dravid on Suryakumar Yadav

Talking about Dravid’s statement about Suryakumar Yadav, the former said that the 32-year-old batter is learning to decode the ODI format. The head coach also felt that team management wants to give him as many opportunities as they can.

“Surya is a really good player, no doubt about it but he would be the first one to admit that his ODI game has not been up to the mark of T20, he is also learning ODI - we want to give him as many opportunities we can & then it's up to him to utilize it,” said Dravid during the post-match presentation.

The approach of doing plenty of experiments under Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach has always been on the receiving end of criticism; both fans and cricket fans have questioned the intent of team management whenever it’s about to get a balanced team with a consistent thought process and an established approach.

The next ODI assignment in their line of preparations for the ODI World Cup 2023, is Asia Cup 2023; they will be playing the continental tournament in Sri Lanka. The performance of team India against West Indies, a team that couldn’t even make it to the World Cup, has come up as a big concern for Indian cricket fans and cricket experts.

Returning back to Rahul Dravid’s defensive statement for Suryakumar, it didn’t go down well with some Indian cricket fans. They immediately took to Twitter and slammed Dravid for ignoring the talented players just to give more chances to out-of-form players like Suryakumar Yadav.
