The veteran Indian off-spinner and World number one Test bowler Ravichandran Ashwin amazed everyone with his sensational performance in the first Test against West Indies. With this, Ashwin once again ignited the debate about his omission from the playing XI of the World Test Championship 2023 final against Australia.

The 36-year-old modern-day bowling great scalped a total of 12 wickets, including two consecutive five-wicket hauls in the first and second innings respectively. Meanwhile, India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has praised India’s modern-day bowling great. Mhambrey reckoned Ashwin as one of the greatest match-winners ever played for India in international cricket.

"It was important to score a big first-innings score which we did and it provided a base to the bowlers. The way Ashwin and (Ravindra) Jadeja bowled is praiseworthy,” said Mhambrey after India’s convincing win against West Indies by an innings and 141 runs in the first of the two-match Test series.

"We in the dressing room know the value of a bowler's performance. According to me, Ashwin is one of the greatest match-winners in our country. He has won a lot of matches for us and has been a consistent performer,” he added.

Apart from this, the Indian bowling coach also praised the young debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made his first Test appearance for India a memorable outing. "The way he (Jaiswal) batted was fabulous and especially for a debutant to come and score a century and that too on not on an easy wicket. It was a slow wicket, got slower as the game progressed, stroke-making wasn't easy," stated Mhambrey while speaking about Jaiswal.

"That's what you need at the international level, adapt yourself to different conditions, and situations and that's what the team expected and he did the role. It's definitely very heartening, positive. The performance will give him a lot of confidence going ahead,” he concluded.

Talking about the ongoing two-match Test series between West Indies and India, now both teams will lock horns with each other in the second and last of the two-match Test series on Thursday, the 20th of July 2023.
