On 18 January 2023, Shubman Gill became the fifth Indian batter to score a double century in ODIs in Hyderabad. He smashed 208 runs off 149 balls against the Kiwis in the three-match home ODI series opener. His innings helped team India to score 349 runs for eight wickets in 50 overs.
However, New Zealand came very close. But, they fell short by only 12 runs and the Men in Blue took a 1-0 lead. Fans went crazy seeing Shubman Gill in such a form. In the last series against the Lankas, he was the second-highest run-scorer. But, Gurkeerat Mann claimed that his father, Lakhwinder paaji was not happy when Gill missed a double hundred in the last match of the Sri Lanka series.
Shubman Gill became the fasted Indian to score 1000* runs in ODIs in 19 matches
Gurkeerat Mann said: “You see how he is getting out, even after he scored a century, he had enough time to score a double century. He will not get these starts all the time. When will he learn?” Gurkeerat said that his father always had high expectations since his childhood days.
“Lakhwinder paaji always had high expectations from Shubman. We all had, right from his childhood days. It is good to see him finally converting his starts and I hope Lakhwinder paaji will be pleased today," Mann added. He further added that Gill was never out of form as he was scoring 40s or 50s on a regular basis.
“He has always been scoring those 40s and 50s. But that century was not coming. The form was never an issue. A batter is out of form if he is struggling to get into double digits. He was always getting those starts. But a cricketer of his caliber will always be under pressure to perform. People will always expect him to score big runs," Gurkeerat Mann concluded. Speaking about Shubman Gill, he became the fastest Indian batter to score 1000* runs in just 19 ODIs.
