The veteran Australian opener David Warner finally broke the silence on his retirement rumours after the fifth Ashes 2023 Test against England at The Oval. Meanwhile, he also cleared the air on his future in red-ball cricket. He said that he would not be playing Test cricket by next year.
Recently, there were speculations that the New South Wales veteran might hang his boots immediately after the fifth Ashes 2023 Test against England. The former England skipper Michael Vaughan also spoke about the same by saying that he had heard ‘whispers’ at the time of the fourth Ashes 2023 Test at Old Trafford.
" I've been on the golf course. No, I don't have an announcement," said Warner to reporters in South London after a long batting practice in the nets.
“Johnny Farnham had one last tour and kept going, so I might have to keep you guessing. I won't be playing any further Test cricket after Pakistan. You have my word,” he added, laughingly and clarifying the entire situation.
I've played a lot better than what I did last time - David Warner
Later, Warner also spoke about how different this edition of the Ashes is different from his outings in the Ashes 2019, four years back. Notably, he averaged below 10 in the Ashes 2019. "I've probably left a few out there but in saying that, I've played a lot better than what I did last time. I've had a couple of unlucky dismissals and then dismissals where I've tried to negate the swing or the seam and it's caught the outside edge of the bat,” said the 36-year-old.
"I feel like I'm in a good space, contributed well, and as a batting unit we're all about partnerships, and I think the partnerships that we've had in key moments of this series have actually worked very well for us as a team,” he added.
Now, the veteran Southpaw will be in action with Australia in the upcoming fifth Ashes 2023 Test against England. Both teams will play this match at the Kennington Oval in London from Thursday, the 27th of July.
