The Border-Gavaskar trophy is slated on February 9 and both India and Australia are giving it their all in the nets to clinch the series. While Rohit Sharma and his men would hope to clinch the series for the third consecutive time, Pat Cummins-led Baggy Greens would be thriving to prevent the same and get back the trophy.
The last time India toured Australia in 2020/21, the Indian team created history by defeating the Baggy Greens at Gabba after three decades and eventually went on to win the series, despite being rattled by injuries right throughout the contest. We decided to handpick three-best knocks from the history of the Border-Gavaskar trophy and Steve Smith stands third on the list with his fiery innings at Pune.
Here are the three best knocks from the Border-Gavaskar trophy:
3) Steve Smith 109 (202) - Pune, 2017
Steve Smith will go down as one of the fighters of Australian cricket and the batter, in general, leaves no trace of weakness when in full flow. One of its kind was his innings at Pune way back in 2017 in the first Test, which India lost by a whopping margin of 333 runs, although they went on to win the series later on.
To add more, with a lead of 155 runs, it was Smith’s fiery innings that helped the Baggy Greens set a massive target of 441 on the board despite quality bowling from veteran Ravichandran Ashwin. It was the right-handed batter’s innings that set the tone for the Australian team.
2) Sachin Tendulkar 214 (363) - Bangalore, 2010
Sachin Tendulkar, the former Indian great, was at his peak in 2010 and it was the same year he achieved the feat of becoming the first batter to score a double ton in ODIs. That was not it as his form peaked during the Tests vs Australia played at home and his innings at Bangalore proved that the right-handed batter was ageing backwards.
It was the second Test of the series and India were leading 1-0. Australia put on 478 runs on the board after electing to bat first and it was Tendulkar’s 214 that helped the Indian team put on 495 runs on the board. India chased down the target of 207 with 7 wickets to spare and the legend was chosen as the Player of the Match and the series as well.
1) Shikhar Dhawan 187 (174) - Mohali, 2013
Shikhar Dhawan was having a great ride with the bat across all formats during his initial days with team India in 2013 and his outing during the 2013 Champions Trophy alongside opener and current team skipper Rohit Sharma would come as a prime example of it.
Dhawan’s best Test innings came at Mohali during his debut in the same year in the 3rd Test against Michael Clarke and his men. Trailing by 408, it was Dhawan’s 187 that helped India add 91 more runs than the Baggy Greens to their total. As far as the match is concerned, it was the MS Dhoni-led team who won the game with 6 wickets to spare chasing a target of 133.
