The World No. T20I batter Suryakumar Yadav led Team India for the first time in the recently concluded first T20I of the five-match series against Australia. Interestingly, he also smashed 80 runs off just 42 balls in his first match as captain for India. Yadav also won the ‘Player of the Match award for his match-defining knock in India’s favor.
Apart from the right-hander, star wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan also scored 58 runs, hitting 2 fours and 5 sixes. On the back of these two massive knocks followed by a blistering finish from young batting sensation Rinku Singh, the Asian side managed to chase down the target of 209 runs in 19.5 overs for the loss of 8 wickets to beat Australia by 2 wickets.
"I just tried to enjoy my batting." - Suryakumar Yadav
Subsequently, the stand-in skipper for three T20Is against Australia also spoke about his first-time captaincy experience for India at the highest level of the game.
“I think it's a proud moment, whenever you play cricket, you think of representing India, it will take some time to sink in but very proud. I left the (captaincy) luggage in the dressing room. I just tried to enjoy my batting, whether I am batting 10 or 40 balls,” said Suryakumar Yadav during the post-match presentation.
Furthermore, SKY also appreciated the performance of the Indian players, especially pacer Mukesh Kumar bowled a brilliant last over, conceding only 5 runs and restricting Australia below the score of 210.
"The way the boys kept their nerve was great to see. It was a tailor-made situation for Rinku. His composure relaxed me also. It was huge (about Mukesh). The way all three fast bowlers pulled us back into the game after 16 overs. Incredible achievement. Thought there would be a little bit of dew but there wasn't. It isn't a big ground and I knew batting would get easy. Thought they might get 230-235 but the bowlers did really well,” he added later.
