IPL 2023: Top 3 highest team totals in the history of the tournament

Over the last 15 years of the Indian Premier League (IPL), there have been several records that have been made or broken. There have been times when bowlers dominated the batters. However, when it was the turn of the batters, they showed no mercy to the bowlers. Fans also enjoy it when the batters hit huge sixes and took charge over the bowlers. Taking this further, teams have been able to put big throughout the 15 years of IPL.

In this article, we will have a look at the top three highest team totals in the tournament’s history.

3. Royal Challengers Bangalore - 248/3 against Gujarat Lions, 2016

Royal Challengers Bangalore probably had their best season in 2016, and so does their former skipper Virat Kohli. The Indian batter was at his peak during IPL 2016, where he amassed a record 973 runs in 16 matches at an average of 81.08 including four centuries in a single season. One of those four centuries came in match number 44 of the season when RCB took on Gujarat Lions at the M. Chinnasawmy Stadium.

Batting first, RCB lost Chris Gayle early at the score of 19 runs in 3.5 overs. After that, RCB star batting pair, Kohli and Ab de Villiers took charge. The duo put up a record partnership of 229 runs as RCB scored 248 runs for the loss of 3 wickets. Kohli got out after smashing 109 runs off 55 balls hitting five fours and eight sixes. While De Villiers remained unbeaten on 129 runs off just 52 balls hitting 10 fours and 12 sixes. RCB bowlers also did their part well as they bowled out GL for just 104 runs giving RCB a huge victory by 144 runs.

2. Lucknow Super Giants - 257/5 against Punjab Kings, 2023

The next name in the list of Lucknow Super Giants who recently scored the second-highest team total in the IPL history in the ongoing season. In match number 38 of IPL 2023 at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali, LSG posted a mammoth total of 257 runs for the loss of 5 wickets while batting first against PBKS. LSG lost their first wicket early as the skipper KL Rahul got out after scoring just 12 runs. After that, Kyle Mayers went on to smash 54 runs off just 24 balls before getting out in the sixth over. After Mayers’ dismissal, Ayush Badoni (43 off 24) and Marcus Stoinis took charge in the middle overs by putting up a partnership of 89 runs for the third wicket.

After that Stoinis (72 off 40) added 76 runs with Nicholas Pooran who got out after scoring 45 off just 19 balls. Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya added the finishing touches as LSG crossed 250 runs. In reply, PBKS were bowled out for 201 runs in 19.5 overs and LSG won the game by 56 runs.

RCB made their appearance again on the list as they hold the record for the highest-ever team total in the history of IPL. It was an absolute batting carnage by RCB against powered by the ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle who registered the highest individual score by any batter in T20s. Batting first in match number 31 of IPL 2013 against Pune Warriors India at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, RCB posted a record total of 263 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Gayle remained unbeaten after smashing 175 runs off just 66 deliveries hitting 13 fours and 17 big sixes. In reply, RCB bowlers also did their job well as they restricted PWI to 133 with the loss of 9 wickets and won the game by 130 runs.
