Mumbai Indians have appointed star all-rounder Hardik Pandya as their skipper ahead of the IPL 2024. Notably, the star cricketer has recently been brought to MI Camp after his successful stint with the Gujarat Titans back in IPL 2022 and IPL 2023. However, Mumbai Indians global head of performance, Mahela Jayawardene, clarified that the next step is taken with the franchise of being future-ready.
Mahela Jayawardene thanked all the former captains, from Sachin Tendulkar to Rohit Sharma, for helping MI become the most successful franchise ever in the history of cricket. In addition, Sri Lanka's star cricketer believes that Hardik Pandya's captaincy will strengthen his side in the upcoming editions.
“It is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future-ready. Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership right from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who while contributing to the immediate success have always had an eye on strengthening the team for the future. It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season,” said Mahela in an official statement.
We welcome Hardik Pandya as the new captain of MI and wish him all the very best: Mahela Jayawardene
Meanwhile, Mahela Jayawardene also expressed happiness for Rohit Sharma's exceptional leadership from IPL 2013 to IPL 2023, which helped them win the five titles and become one of the most successful franchises ever. Moreover, the legendary cricketer has welcomed former Gujarat Titans captain Hardik Pandya to the Mumbai Indians as the new captain of the IPL 2024.
“We express our gratitude to Rohit Sharma for his exceptional leadership; his tenure as the captain of the Mumbai Indians since 2013 has been nothing short of extraordinary. His leadership has not only brought unparalleled success to the team but has also solidified his place as one of the finest captains in the history of the IPL. We welcome Hardik Pandya as the new captain of MI and wish him all the very best," he added further.
