Team India are set to receive a huge boost ahead of the Super 4 stage of the 2023 Asia Cup as their first-choice wicketkeeper batter KL Rahul is all set to join the squad in Sri Lanka. According to reports, Rahul got medical clearance from the Indian Cricket Board and will soon fly to Sri Lanka to participate in India's upcoming matches. Notably, India needs to beat Nepal in their next match on September 4 to advance to the next round of the tournament.

Rahul had been out of action since the halfway stage of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 as he suffered a thigh injury during the match between Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore. The right-hander then underwent successful surgery, followed by rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. During this period, the Men in Blue team lost the services of their senior batter for several matches, however, he recovered quickly to earn a place in the Asia Cup 2023 squad.

The 32-year-old started batting and wicketkeeping practice during his rehab time and even played some intra-squads matches in Bengaluru. But head coach Rahul Dravid confirmed that Rahul will not be available for the first two matches as he suffered a slight niggle a few days before India's Asia Cup opener against Pakistan. The Karnataka cricketer will miss India's next match against Nepal, meaning he will be directly available in the Super 4 phase.

Ishan Ksiahn or KL Rahul? Who will India go with?

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen whether India will bring Rahul into the playing XI after Ishan Kishan's impressive performance against Pakistan. Kishan was included as a backup wicketkeeper in the 17-man squad and was given the nod in the first match in Rahul's absence and he seized the opportunity with both hands.

It was the 25-year-old (82 off 81) who brought life to India's innings after the top-order collapse. He batted alongside Hardik Pandya (87 off 90) and took Team India to a respectable total of 266. If Kishan had not performed well against Pakistan, Rahul would have made a direct entry to the team. But now it has become a headache for the Indian captain Rohit Sharma and coach Dravid.
