After the rescheduled Test and the three-match T20I series between India and England, the two teams locked horns in the opening match of the three-match ODI series on Tuesday. Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to field in the overcast conditions at the Oval. Indian team suffered a big blow as Virat Kohli failed to feature in the playing eleven due to a groin strain.

The England team had their senior players namely Joe Root, Ben Stokes, and Jonny Bairstow back in the eleven after they were rested for the T20I series. The Indian bowling, led by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami, was all over the English batters right from the word go.

Bumrah’s first over was a double-wicket maiden as he scalped both dangerous Jason Roy and Joe Root for a duck. The two early blows brought Ben Stokes to the crease who joined Jonny Bairstow at the wicket. The ball was dancing to the tunes of Indian opening bowlers, Bumrah and Shami, who didn’t give an inch to the English batsmen.

After Bumrah’s early blows, Shami came into the party as he dismissed Stokes, Buttler and Overton. At one stage, England were reeling at 68-8 and were on the risk of registering their lowest- total ever in the history of ODI cricket. But David Willey and Brydon Carse saved England from the embarrassment as they swung their bats and added some valuable runs for their team.

The English team never recovered from their dismal start and were skittled for 110 in 25.2 overs. Bumrah was the chief destroyer as he registered his best ever bowling figures in ODI career of 6/19 in 7.2 overs, while Shami picked up 3/31 in 7 overs.

The Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan walked out to bat in pursuit of the target set by England. The duo survived a close run-out chance in the very first over of the innings. After that, they gave absolutely nothing away to the England bowlers as Rohit Sharma put on his marvellous stroke-play at display, scoring 75 off 57 balls, while Dhawan took a back seat and scored 31 off 54 balls. India chased down the target in 18.4 overs and won the match by 10 wickets, taking 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
