Indian cricket is going through a tumultuous phase at the moment they made a shocking exit at the 20-20 World Cup against England in the semi-final. When India were building up to the 20-20 World Cup, there was a merry-go-round in terms of captaincy in the Indian Team. Seven captains have led India in the last year. Rohit Sharma has been plagued with injuries and fitness issues and hence has not led the Men in Blue in a huge number of games.

In the seven ODI series that India had in 2021. Rohit Sharma has played in only two ODI series. India have been led by Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul at different points in time in place of Rohit. Even though there has been a chorus from some notable cricketers in the India fraternity that say that Rohit needs to lead Team India at all times to ensure continuity in the side and also that will make the side a more cohesive unit. However former India cricketer Hemang Badani had a slightly different point of view.

"That is going to be the way forward. " - Hemang Badani about Rohit Sharma's captaincy stint

"With the World Cup coming and with us still at a phase where we aren't clear about our side, we necessarily have to try out a lot more players. Yes, to a large extent it does help to have the same captain in all formats but it's practically impossible for Rohit Sharma to be able to play and sustain in every series. They will have to find the right balance but it's not possible for Rohit to play every series, that's not gonna happen. That is going to be the way forward. A lot of us will feel why this should happen now. It was never the case in the past. But cricket has changed now. Every top player in every side does take a break here and there," Badani told Hindustan times.

When asked about who the next potential captain of India would be, He talked about Hardik Pandya. "Hardik is ready. Whatever I get to hear of him, he seems like a born leader." Hardik has led India in a T20 series in Ireland and also led India to a 1-0 series win in the T20s over New Zealand. He recently led the Gujarat franchise to an Indian T20 League title in their inaugural season in 2022.
