Star England batter Jason Roy amazed everyone with his move of opting out from the squad for the upcoming series against Ireland. Roy took this decision after not being picked in England’s squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, in India. It has also fuelled the speculations and assumptions of his potential retirement from international cricket.

Meanwhile, the England selector and former cricketer, Luke Wright, cleared the air over Roy’s absence from the England squad for the upcoming Ireland series. Wright said that the decision came from Roy as he didn’t expect any call-up from the management for this series.

“He wasn't expecting to be in that Ireland squad and then to get the news that he was missing out on the World Cup all came as a bit of a hammer blow. We've made it apparent to Jason that we won't judge him differently for that position as the spare batter at the top of the order whether he plays against Ireland or not,” said Luke Wright.

The discussion on Roy’s exclusion is also getting more intense because the opener Harry Brook was included in England’s World Cup squad even after the poor outings in the recently concluded ODI series against New Zealand. In Roy’s absence, Dawid Malan started the innings for England in the series against New Zealand.

Furthermore, selector Luke Wright also showed confidence and belief in the England squad, which was picked for the upcoming edition of the marquee international tournament.

“We have selected a squad we are confident can go to India and win the World Cup,” Wright said.

Now, England management has included Tom Kohler-Cadmore after Jason Roy’s decision to keep himself away from the Ireland series. The Somerset star will be available for selection in the second ODI of the series.

“It feels great to have got the England call and hopefully if I get the chance I can show them what I can do. Whatever happens, I will enjoy the moment. It's a special week for me at the end of my first season with Somerset which has seen us win the Vitality Blast. I couldn't be happier," said Cadmore to ESPNcricinfo.
