Teenage India athlete, Jeremy Lalrinnunga, 19, has won a Gold Medal in the weightlifting category in the Commonwealth Games 2022. On July 30, Mirabai Chanu also won Gold in the same sport.

Talking about Jeremy, he got injured during the event. Notably, he has been troubled with back and knee injuries since December 2021 and was out of action for much of the competitions after that.

However, he won a Gold medal in Tashkent Commonwealth Championships which was enough for him to confirm qualification for the multi-sport event. Talking about the men’s 67 kg weightlifting final, lifted 136kg in his first snatch effort, and 140kgs in his next try. He then coupled it with a lift of 160kg in the Clean & Jerk category to finish with 300kg, which is a CWG record.

Notably, when he lifted 154kgs, the Indian fans panicked as he got injured. He was feeling a bit of discomfort right after the first attempt. Fortunately, he came back and put an eventually match-winning effort of lifting 160kg. His opponent Samoa's Vaipova needed a monstrous lift of 174kg to take gold but failed. With this, India has now won two Gold medals. Overall, this is their fifth medal.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga holds three national records to his name. He holds the national record for snatch 141 kg, clean and jerk 167 kg, and total 306 kg – in the 67 kg category. Talking about Jeremy, he shot into the national reckoning when he became the first of three Indian athletes to win gold medals at the 2018 Youth Olympics with a total lift of 274kg. He entered the weightlifting World Championships the next year, finishing with a ranking of 21 in the men's 67kg event.

The ongoing event was his first event at the senior level. Lalrinnunga was just 1kg shy to improve his personal best which stands at a national record of 306kg (140kg, 166kg). He has been training in Birmingham for over a month now and has insisted before that his injuries are behind him although he got injured during the event.
