Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad have appointed former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori as their new head coach. SRH confirmed the development on Monday, August 7 after parting ways with West Indies great Brain Lara. The Hyderabad-based franchise, which had a disappointing outing last season, is aiming to make a comeback in the 2024 IPL under Vettori's guidance.

Despite having Lara and some outstanding players in the squad, SRH finished at the bottom of the IPL 2023 points table after winning just four out of 14 games. The legendary Windies cricketer has now taken up the role of performance mentor for his national team after their heartbreaking exit from the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Announcing the appointment of the new head coach, SRH posted a picture of Vettori on its Twitter account with the caption: “Kiwi legend Daniel Vettori joins the #OrangeArmy as Head Coach. Welcome, coach!”

Check out the post below:

“As our 2-year association with Brian Lara comes to an end, we bid adieu to him. Thank you for the contributions to the Sunrisers. We wish you all the best for your future endeavours," the franchisee wrote in a separate post.

Can Vettori's expertise help SRH regain their 2016 form?

Vettori, who retired from all forms of cricket following the 2015 Cricket World Cup, had served as the head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2014 to 2018. His most notable accomplishment with the Bangalore-based club will be guiding the team to the 2016 season final, in which Virat Kohli and Co. suffered an 8-run loss against SRH.

The 44-year-old marked his presence in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) by taking up the role of head coach of Barbados Royals for the 2021 season. He also served as the spin bowling coach of the Bangladesh national team before joining Australia as an assistant and spin bowling coach in May last year.

The veteran spinner has played 34 IPL games and has taken 28 wickets at an economy rate of 6.79. He has also led RCB to 12 victories in 22 games from 2011-12. It will be interesting to see if Vettori can bring SRH back to the 2016 vibes.
