Australia skipper Pat Cummins took a flight to Sydney on Sunday to attend to a 'serious family illness' mid-way through the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series. The Australia Cricket Board, however, mentioned that the skipper would be back in time before the third Test starts on March 1 in Indore. If the skipper cannot return in time, Steven Smith will fill in to lead the Aussies in Test 3 of the BGT. Notably, India and Australia will also play a three-match ODI series after the BGT, starting March 17.

"Cummins has flown home for personal reasons due to a serious family illness. He will return to India later this week to rejoin preparations for the third Test in Indore. We ask the media to respect his privacy," said Cricket Australia in a statement on Monday.

India lead the 4-Test BGT series 2-0 against Australia

Regarding the ongoing Test series, India has taken an unassailable lead after winning the first two Tests of the series. They dominated the Aussies in Nagpur, winning by a massive margin of an innings and 132 runs. The second Test at Delhi seemed balanced until the end of the first innings for both sides. But India made the difference on Day 2, restricting the Aussies to 113 after conceding a first-innings lead of one run. They cruised to their target of 115 runs losing four wickets on the way, and established an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

Interestingly, the ongoing BGT Test series is India's last chance to qualify for the finals of the Global Test Championships scheduled to be played between June 18 and 23 at the Oval. Moreover, the hosts are on the hunt for a third-straight Test series victory over the Kangaroos, having won the last two BGT Test series in Australia. The next Test will be played at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, starting March 1, while the showdown will be at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, beginning March 9.
