Barbados Royals had a shocker against Trinbago Knight Riders in their last match but bounced back in style in their next match by pulling off a lovely chase against Jamaica Tallawahs. Royals returned to winning ways in the Caribbean Premier League (LPL) 2023 with a thrilling six-wicket victory over Tallawahs at Kensington Oval on Thursday, August 31.

After winning the toss, Royals captain Rovman Powell opted to field first and the decision proved correct as they got the early wicket of rival captain Brandon King in the second over.Β  Tallawahs were destroyed in the powerplay with Jason Holden striking twice and Kyle Mayers also grabbing one wicket. However, the visitors staged an excellent recovery in the middle overs led by Shamarh Brooks.

Tallawahs were reeling at 25/3 at the end of six overs, but Brooks and Raymon Reifer steadied the ship with a 54-run partnership before Qais Ahmad cleaned up the latter to give Royals control back. Brooks was solid throughout their innings, scoring 78 off 40 balls, including seven fours and four sixes. A vital performance from Imad Wasim in the lower order took Tallawahs to a competitive score of 160/7 at the end of their 20 overs.

Alick Athanaze was the man for RoyalsΒ

By removing Rahkeem Cornwall and Kyle Mayers inside the powerplay, the Tallawahs bowlers put their team in the driver's seat. The game looked set for a close finish but Alick Athanaze ensured Royals won't be suffocating in this chase. His powerful knock of 76 off 48 was the foundation of their successful chase with an over to spare. Athanaze and Laurie Evans stitched an 89-run partnership with the former stealing the show with his reverse sweeps and elegant strokeplay.

Speaking after the game, Player of the Match winner Athanaze said: "It was pretty special, good to get the team over the line after a loss. It (pitch) was slow initially but got better. Past two games I haven't been giving myself some time, so I wanted to ensure I do that right."
