Argentina skipper Lionel Messi and Spanish international David Villa played for FC Barcelona from 2010 to 2012. While the former was part of the team since 2002 (Age Group and senior sides), Villa joined the team in 2010. This happened after Spain won the FIFA World Cup title in South Africa. For the next three seasons, both Villa and Messi played with each till 2012.

In 2013 summers, the Spanish international moved to Atletico Madrid. On the other hand, the 2022 FIFA World Cup-winning skipper played for the team till 2020. From 2013 to 2020, David had a journey as he played in the United States, Japan, and Australia. In the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic (2020), the 2010 FIFA World Cup winner retired from the game.

He is currently working with Odisha FC as Global Sports Director. Meanwhile, he has praised Lionel Messi while reminiscing his time with the Spanish Club.

"I scored close to 50 goals in three years, almost all of them with a contribution from Leo Messi. When Leo Messi is by your side it’s a blessing; often when things get complicated he comes up with a solution," Villa said in an interview, via @forcabarca_ar on Twitter (h/t BarcaUniversal).

It's Lionel Messi's decision to leave PSG and rejoin Barcelona

Meanwhile, the 35-year-old's future with Paris Saint-Germain hangs in balance. His contract will expire this summer and the Argentina international isn't reportedly keen on an extension. There are rumors that Messi might move back to Barcelona, the team he had to leave in 2021 due to lack of funds.

"It is Leo's decision. Honestly, we haven't talked about this topic, but it's clear that in the end, seeing Messi with another shirt other than Barca's is always weird," Jordi Alba told GOAL.com
