On 18 October 2022, Sri Lanka took on United Arab Emirates (UAE) for their second match in the qualifiers in Geelong. The current Asia Cup champion, Sri Lanka faced a defeat in the first match against Namibia. On the other hand, UAE faced a defeat against the Netherlands. So, the stage was set for a must-win match between these two sides.

Speaking of the match, CP Rizwan won the toss and he chooses to field first. For Sri Lanka, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis came out to open the innings. However, they had a quickfire start as Sri Lanka lost their first wicket for 42 runs in 4.4 overs.

Karthik Meiyappan took three wickets for 19 runs in four overs against Sri Lanka in the 20-20 World Cup 2022

After the first wicket, other batters also chipped in with some crucial contributions. Sri Lanka finally managed only 152 runs in 20 overs. Pathum Nissanka was the lone warrior as he scored 74 runs off 60 balls. He hit six fours and two sixes throughout the inning. Apart from him, Dhananjaya de Silva scored 33 runs off 21 balls. But, a fantastic incident happened as UAE’s Karthik Meiyappan took the first hat-trick of the World Cup.  

The incident took place during the 15th over. On the last three consecutive deliveries of that over, Karthik Meiyappan dismissed three batters of the Asia Cup champion. First, he took the wicket of Bhanuka Rajapaksa. Then, he dismissed Charith Asalanka and skipper, Dasun Shanaka respectively. It was a great moment for the 22-year-old youngster as he became the first player to take a hat-trick in this year’s 20-20 World Cup. Finally, he managed to take three wickets for 19 runs in four overs in the match. Fans also went crazy seeing the young leggie with such a fantastic performance. His performance was instrumental in restricting Sri Lanka within 152 runs in this must-win game for both teams.
