Manchester City go past Sevilla to clinch their maiden UEFA Super Cup title

Manchester City won their first ever UEFA Super Cup title after defeating Sevilla FC in the final of the tournament 5-4 in shootouts.

Manchester City and Sevilla FC locked horns in the thrilling final of the UEFA Super Cup 2023. Both teams played this nail-biting clash at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Greece. The regulation time of the matches ended up with an equal scoreline of 1-1, but it was City who managed to have an upper hand in the penalty shoot-outs.

City smashed 5 goals in the penalty shoot-outs in comparison to Sevilla’s 4 goals. Speaking of the regulation of the match, Los Nervionenses’ centre-forward Youssef En-Nesyri scored a brilliant field goal to gain a lead of 1-0 for his side in the 25th minute of the match.

Sevilla kept this lead till the end of the first half but City’s young attacking mid-fielder Cole Palmer smashed an equalizer in the 63rd minute of the match to take his team back in the contest. Later, The Sky Blues smashed all five shots of the penalty shoot-out in the goal post and won their first-ever UEFA Super Cup title.

City midfielder Jack Grealish also spoke after the match and appreciated the team manager for his efforts with the team.

“The manager made it so clear to us before the game how much he wants to win this trophy. You want to win everything anyway, but that gave us more of an urge. This club has never won it. It’s a brilliant feeling,” said Grealish while talking about manager Pep Guardiola and the team’s performance in the final.

Apart from Sevilla’s star forward Erik Lamela also discussed about team’s loss, after the conclusion of the title clash against City.

“It’s really frustrating for us, but I’m proud of my teammates. The team did a good job, we ran a lot against a very, very good team,” said Erik Lamela.

City skipper Kyle Walker also appreciated his side for holding the nerves till the last minute of the match and coming out as the winners of the title.

“It was always going to be a tough game. The lads put in a good performance. We have to be more clinical but we got the job done,” said Walker to TNT Sports.

“If anyone played with me they know I don’t like taking penalties because I don’t like letting people down if I miss. Pep put me in at five. show leadership. Luckily, it went in and was the winning one,” he added.
