Erling Haaland and Manchester City defeated 10-men Burnley 3-0 at Turf Moor, continuing their winning ways from the previous campaign. The team led by Pep Guardiola entered the 2023–24 season as the defending Premier League and Triple Crown champions. The unstoppable Norwegian frontman's performance soon put to rest any doubts over Haaland's potential as a one-season wonder.

In only the fourth minute of the new season, Erling Haaland gave Manchester City the lead by taking the very first touch. Rodri directed a beautiful cross from Kevin De Bruyne towards the Manchester City striker inside the Burnley box. He scored with ease to give Guardiola's team the lead.

During the first half, the Clarets did exhibit some potential thanks to threats from players like Lyle Foster and Luca Koleosho. However, it was Haaland once more who helped the Cityzens extend their advantage in the 36th minute.

In the 36th minute, the Norwegian scored again, although this time it was a fierce strike which struck the crossbar before going in. Although there were reasons for concern because De Bruyne had to leave the game due to an injury immediately before Haaland's second goal, Manchester City was still making a statement.

At halftime, Guardiola appeared to be upset with City's frontman, and the two argued as they walked off the pitch. Although it's uncertain what the coach got upset about, it says a lot about his expectations.

Rodri adds a third as Man City breeze past Burnley

In the 75th minute, Rodri, a UEFA Champions League sensation for Manchester City, scored from close range. When Burnley struggled to clear their lines, the ball dropped to the Spaniard, who slammed it in.

Haaland left the game in the 79th minute, preventing him from scoring a hat-trick. He was replaced by Cole Palmer, and Josko Gvardiol entered the game to make his Premier League debut.

After Anass Zaroury received his marching orders for a careless challenge on Kyle Walker, Burnley found themselves down to 10 men. The Moroccan player initially received a yellow card, but it was later reversed, and in the 90+4th minute, he was dismissed.
