Australia are currently busy playing the second of the three-match home Test series against South Africa. After winning the first match with ease, the home team are looking to seal the series at the MCG by winning this match. However, Mitchell Starc has shown great form with the ball in the series opener. Starc took five wickets in two innings of the first game.
But, on day one of the second match, he suffered a finger injury. Now, reports have come out that he is going to miss the upcoming third Test in Sydney. Even, he will find it tough to get recovered before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India in February. Regarding that matter, Australian head coach Andrew McDonald provides an update before the play of day three.
“There’s clearly a role there for him if Mitchell Starc was to go down.” - Andrew McDonald on Lance Morris
During an interview with SEN Test Cricket, McDonald said that Mitchell Starc can play a limited role still in this ongoing Test. He said: “He’ll play a role with bat and ball over the course of the game. He’ll be limited and his capabilities won't be as full as he would like, but he’ll be able to do a role for us this morning. That’s a positive sign this morning.”
He also talked about the addition of Lance Morris to the squad and he can get a chance in Sydney if Starc fails to get fit. “We always look to complement the attack… we see Lance Morris added to the squad, there’s clearly a role there for him if Mitchell Starc was to go down. So he may be looking like he’ll get an opportunity in Sydney based on the balance of that attack,” McDonald added.
Speaking of the ongoing match, Australia bundled out the Proteas for 189 runs in their first innings. Mitchell Starc took two wickets for 39 runs in 13 overs. Then, in reply, Australia declared their first innings after scoring 575 runs for eight wickets. Thus, they took a huge lead of 386 runs.
