David Warner will once again be terrorised by Stuart Broad in the Ashes with full permission. Mark Wood was left off the first Test lineup at Edgbaston in favour of Broad, who would be used in the course of the series to surprise the Australians with his additional speed.
The 36-year-old Broad was chosen to attempt and prolong the grip he got over Warner from 2019 where he knocked him over seven times out of his ten innings where he started bowling around the wicket. It was the only genuine choice that Ben Stokes plus Brendon McCullum needed to make this week.
After overcoming their injuries, James Anderson and Ollie Robinson have been selected, while Moeen Ali earns his 65th cap in his home stadium just a few days after receiving the OBE from Windsor Castle.
The batting order is as predicted, with the new father Jonny Bairstow resuming his position at number seven and captain Stokes scheduled to play at position six. Broad was left out at the beginning of the first Ashes visit by England, and Warner entered the series scoring 94 during a nine wicket victory. This time, Broad's intensely competitive personality, which seems to have been created expressly for Ashes cricket, can be seen in the opening game with Anderson and Robinson.
If his Ashes cricket started at Edgbaston or at some point in the series, Broad said last week, he was unclear. However, he was convinced that his competitive instincts would be running whenever it happened. He said, “I told Stokesy that I felt the best rhythm all season on the first day against Ireland which is just a great place to be. I play really well at all of the Ashes grounds and I love playing against Australia. I’m happy to try and strike whenever I get the chance.”
The England team to play the first Ashes Test against Australia is as follows : Duckett, Crawley, Pope, Root, Brook, Stokes (c), Bairstow (wk), Moeen, Broad, Robinson, Anderson
