Sri Lanka registered their first win in the super-4 round of the Asia Cup 2023 with a 21-run win against Bangladesh; both teams played this super-4 fixture at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday. Bangladesh won the toss and decided to bowl first against the Sri Lankan batting lineup.

Sri Lanka lost their first wicket on the score of 34 runs when Dimuth Karunaratne fell prey to Hasan Mahmud in the 6th over. Then came a crucial partnership of 74 runs for the second wicket between Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis. Nissanka played a knock of 40 runs, including five fours. Other than him, Kusal Mendis also scored a half-century of 50 runs, with 6 fours and a six.

Apart from this, the number 4 batter Sadeera Samarawickrama made a difference and played a match-defining knock of 93 runs off just 72 balls with 8 boundaries and two sixes. But still, there was a time in the first innings when Sri Lankan batting faced a collapse their score was 164 runs for the loss of five wickets in 37.1 overs from 108 runs for the loss of 2 wickets.

However, the three important knocks from the top-order batters helped Sri Lanka to post a total of 257 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the allotted 50 overs. Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud scalped three wickets each for Sri Lanka, alongside two wickets picked by Shoriful Islam.

Bangladesh failed to chase amidst struggle from Tawhid Hridoy

While chasing the target, the middle order batter Tawhid Hridoy showed some intent for Bangladesh and scored 82 runs, with seven fours and a six. But other than him, none of the batters could cross the individual mark of 30+ runs. Eventually, Bangladesh could score only 236 runs and lost all the wickets in 48.1 overs which resulted in Sri Lanka’s win by 21 runs.

With this win, Sri Lanka has become the second team to register the most consecutive ODI wins with 13 wins in a row just behind Australia, who have 21 ODI wins in a row.
