Australia and New Zealand locked horns in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns. The home team (Australia) won the toss and elected to bowl first in the day-night affair. The bowlers bowled in the first five and got their first reward in the form of Martin Guptill. The Kiwi opener was caught at backward point by Glenn Maxwell off Mitchell Starc.

The visitors looked like recovering from the early wicket as the skipper Kane Williamson and Devon Conway stitched a partnership of 81 runs. The latter was trapped lbw by Adam Zampa after scoring 46 off 68 balls. Williamson (47) also missed out on the half-century as he was caught at deep midwicket by David Warner off Maxwell.

At 127/3, vice-captain Tom Latham and all-rounder Daryl Mitchell stitched a partnership of 52 runs to take the team forward. However, the wicket of Mitchell (26) at the team score of 179 turned out to be a turning point in the innings. The team was reduced to 232/9 at the end of their innings. For the Yellow brigade, Maxxwell took four wickets, Josh Hazelwood took three, while Starc and Zampa took one each.

Australia chased down the target despite the hiccups

In reply, Aaron Finch's men had the worst of starts they could imagine. After 12 overs, half of their side was back in the pavilion and the scorecard read 44/5. At this stage, Cameron Green and wicketkeeper batter Alex Carey decided to put their hand up in the team's cause. They stitched a partnership of 158 runs for the sixth wicket. Notably, the team management would have sent Maxwell in at this stage. However, they had other ideas.

Meanwhile, the 158-run partnership between Carey and Green helped the team reach much closer to the target. However, the quick wickets of Carey, Maxwell, and Starc pegged the team into deeper trouble. In the end, the unbeaten partnership of 26 runs between Green and Zampa helped the team win the game by two wickets.
