Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir has backed Rahul Dravid to extend his tenure as head coach of the Indian cricket team. The legendary cricketer was appointed as the head coach when Ravi Shastri stepped down after their 2021 T20 World Cup loss, where Team India was knocked out in the super 12 stage. Rahul Dravid has guided Team India to the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup, the WTC Final, the Asia Cup 2023 win, and the ODI World Cup 2023 Final.
Gautam Gambhir affirms that Rahul Dravid's contract should have been extended for two more years, considering Team India's performance under his coaching skills. In addition, the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning star feels that if the players are continuing after the ODI World Cup 2023 final loss, then the coach should be.
"The way India have played in the World Cup, his contract should be renewed automatically. It will be very bad if you judge a coach by just one match. Whatever is with the players, its the same for the coach. Every player. every coach wants to win the World Cup for the team. So, if he wants to renew...there can be nothing better than continuity," Gautam Gambhir said on Sportskeeda.
Rohit Sharma probably shouldn't have said this: Gautam Gambhir
However, the former India opener slammed India's skipper Rohit Sharma for Rahul Dravid's remark. Notably, after the ODI World Cup final, Rohit Sharma affirms that Rahul Dravid has supported them a lot, and Team India's wanted to win the ODI World Cup 2023 final for Dravid. Gautam Gambhir affirms that one should aim to win the title for the country over any individual.
"You are trying to win the World Cup for the entire country. And if you want to say such a thing then don't say it in the media. Keep it within yourself. The truth is, it is more important to win a World Cup for the nation. I was asked the same in 2011 when everyone said we were trying to win the World Cup for one individual, I said no I want to win the Cup for my country. I picked up the bat for my country. So, Rohit probably shouldn't have said this," he added further.
